Lincolnshire NHS trust goes live with Rio electronic patient record

Mental health trust implements EPR to ensure all staff can access patient records on site or in the community

Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT), a provider of mental health and learning disability services, has gone live with the Rio Electronic Patient Record from Servelec.

Over 2,000 mental health and community practitioners, from medics and psychiatric nurses to pharmacists and social workers, can now securely and safely access the demographics, referrals and community and inpatient records of their 202,080 patient base on site or when operating remotely.

LPFT worked with Servelec to design and configure the best digital solution to replace the previous Silverlink Mental Health EPR system.

The strategy called for:

• A system that provides a user-friendly interface for staff that was intuitive and would lead to less time away from the patient
• A system that has the capability to work offline due to the rurality of the county
• A system that can quickly and easily link to the data archive of data not formally migrated into the Rio system
• A system to support patient consent models to ensure safety and security of patient data
• A system that is a true enabler of supporting care, which is user friendly for all, particularly the operational teams
• A system that supports the mandatory, statutory and local reporting requirements and one that meets compliancy in Mental Health Act legislation, information governance, and information security

The project to deliver a live system was completed in just six months.

Sarah Connery, director of finance and information at the trust, said: “We have worked closely with Servelec, staff, commissioners and patient representatives to build a specification that best meets our needs.

“We now feel we have developed an easy-to-use, intuitive-but-robust clinical system that can enable our staff to work as effectively and efficiently as possible to care for our patients.

“It is still early days, as we only went live with the Rio system at the beginning of September; but we look forward to being able to evidence the benefits of the investment once the system is bedded in.”

Neil Laycock, managing director of Servelec’s healthcare business, added: “Long-term care is at the centre of Rio’s design principles and we’ve designed it to be completely patient-centric for LPFT.

“The team wanted it to be available on multiple devices, which are all essential, given the locations and job roles of users and patients.

“Rio will give the LPFT team more time with patients, to care for them as opposed to administrating around them.”
